Pursuing Student Grants for College

Getting a good college education is one of the most important things a person can do to better him/herself. With that being said, going to college can be quite expensive and not everyone is able to afford it.

Some people are lucky enough to have parents who have invested in their futures by putting aside money in an interest bearing college fund.

However, the majority of people wind of having to obtain financing through student grants, college loan programs and a number of other financing options.

Pursuing student grants is not necessarily difficult but not everyone who applies will be approved for a grant.

Federal Pell Grant

One of the most popular student grants applied for by individuals across the country and in all sorts of educational institutions is the Federal Pell Grant. This grant is applied for by filling out and submitted a FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid).

This application will help to assess whether or not students are eligible for some sort of financial aid or grant from the government – there are income limitations on Pell Grants and unless financial hardship can be proven they may not be approved.

In addition, there is always a deadline imposed for turning in the FAFSA, so it is important to be sure you apply on time in order to be considered – the form can be found at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/ – fill out the form to apply.

Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant

Probably the second most popular grant given to college students is the Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant. This grant is also given based on the student’s financial situation.

The major difference between this student grant and the Pell Grant is that eligibility for the Federal Supplemental Opportunity Grant is not determined by the government, but by the college or educational institution.

Every student has a student aid report generated and the information that is submitted in that report is what the university or college will use to determine whether a student might be eligible for this grant. The best way to find out if you are someone who qualifies for this grant is to speak with your financial aid counselor at your school.

Setting up an appointment to sit down with an advisor is the best way to learn more about applying.

Student Grants and Loans for Nurses

If you are interested in becoming a nurse then you may be pleased to know that there are a number of nursing grants, college student loans and special scholarships that can be obtained. In fact, each and every year there are over two hundred nursing scholarships handed out to nursing students who agree to a couple of simple terms.

Since jobs in the nursing field continue to be in high demand, there has been a steady increase in the availability of nursing student grants and loans.

Candidates for these scholarships must agree to work a minimum of two full years in a critical need facility after graduating. In some cases these scholarships cover the entire cost of school and even offer a stipend. In other cases only a portion may be paid but it is certainly worth applying.

Because nursing is such an essential profession that is in such high demand, it is much easier for nursing students to obtain government college funding. Two of the best programs for nursing students are INET- Innovative Nurse Education Technologies and NEPQR- Nurse Education, Practice, Quality and Retention.

Student Loans

Student loans are obtainable at most financial institutions. Typically, a college student who has not established any sort of credit will need a parent or other family member to co-sign on the loan. However, most of the time student loans are given with a grace period for repayment. This means that the loan will not have to be paid on until after the student has finished school and has worked for a specific period of time.

Generally speaking this time period can be anywhere from 6 months to two years, depending on the type of loan that is received. If the loan is a federal student loan then there is a possibility that the loan may even come with no interest attached to it.

Sallie Mae loans are excellent for students and to find more information on the loans that may be available go to https://www.salliemae.com/.

There are also a number of great scholarships available to students who come from minorities, suffer from disabilities and of course based on merit. Most of the time kids getting ready to graduate from high school will begin working on scholarships prior to the school year ending.

However, not everyone going to college is in high school. To find out whether or not there are any scholarships that might be available to you, contact the financial aid department at the college you wish to attend.
