Securing Government Grants for Women

There are currently over 900 Federal programs involved with government grants. Do you know that there are grants specifically only awarded to the Venus department? With divorce rates as high as they are and single mothers being far more accepted these days, government grants for women interested in starting a business can be a welcome form of assistance.

There are no less than 26 agencies in charge of handing out these government grants. Some of the programs for grants include but are not limited to employment, art, agriculture, training, community development, labor and legal assistance.

Not necessarily associated with small business are the grants that are going to single mothers to advance their education.

It’s All In What You Know

There are different opportunities for grants to further a woman’s education, some of which do not require repayment. Some of these fall under the categories of alumni gifts, religious organizations’ donations, scholarships awarded by private organizations, Federal or state government and work study programs.

How Hard is It to Apply?

The application process for a grant is relatively simple. Government grants can be applied for by single mothers as long as they are a citizen or resident of the United States. Incidentally, foreign citizens who have lived in the United States for not less than three years are also able to apply for grants. The application forms themselves are a bit confusing and must be read over in their entirety, and understood, before they will be accepted as filled out correctly. Be sure to understand the qualifications for the type of loan for which you are applying and that you are applying for the correct loan which you are specifically requesting.

But What If You’re Not a Single Mother?

What if you’re looking for government grants for women business owners or women who want to start a small business? A state agency might be your best bet. There are a handful of types of grants to for which women can apply. They are as follows:

  • A microloan program: This is a grant given by the Small Business Administration to assist business owners, women, minority entrepreneurs and low income individuals capable of operating a successful small business.
  • Environmental health: This grant is from the National Institutes of Health in the hopes of fostering an understanding of harmful environmental agents and the effects of human exposure to them.
  • Short term lending for disadvantaged business enterprises: These grants from the OST Administration Secretariate are to assist disabled veterans, women and minority owned disadvantaged businesses.
  • Research for oral disorders and diseases: The National Institutes of Health gives this grant to those involved in fundamental scientific research, health promotion, and therapeutics, diagnostics and disease prevention involving oral and dental disorders.
  • Small business innovation research: The Cooperative Education, State Research and Extension Service provides grants to help increase the role played by small businesses in our community and stimulate technological advancement.

Addiction and drug abuse research programs, alcohol research programs, research related to communication and deafness disorders, health disparities and minority health research programs, and human genome research are additional grants given to women for the purposes of research and business development by various agencies. If you are a woman and you need to seek out these grants, don’t worry – aids are abundant, you just need to know how to go about it!
