If you’re thinking about applying for a government grant, there are some things you need to know first, such as the types of grants that are available, and how to navigate the complex grant application process. Reading this short but informative article will help you prepare to apply for one of those elusive government grants.

One of the first things you need to know is what exactly a government grant is! Grants are money that you are given by the government. People think a lot of times that a grant is just like a gift, but it isn’t really the case. There are requirements you must meet in order to get your grant, and if you are caught providing false information or if you don’t meet the requirements, you’ll have to pay the grant back. If you can’t or don’t pay it back, the government can sue you or put you in prison.

If you are college-bound, you can apply for one of the many government-funded student aid grants. College is very expensive, and many otherwise capable individuals end up missing out on a quality education because they cannot afford it. Grant eligibility is determined by the student’s financial situation, and the amount you might get can vary. You might get enough to pay for part of your schooling, or you could get enough to pay for all of your college expenses. There are also some work study programs that you can take part in, all while you’re in school.

There are also business grants, which allow people to start a new business or enlarge an existing one. Business grants are typically alloted to certain segments of the population, such as women and minorities. Aside from student and business grants, there are some other ones, like foundation grants. These are given for humanitarian purposes, to people who want to improve their community or the environment as a whole. These grants most often go to relief groups.

Hopefully, this article has left you a little more informed about government grants and the processes behind them. Now, you’ll know how to figure out which kind of grant will best suit your needs, and you’ll go into the application process with eyes wide open.
